Muscle mass refers to the amount of soft muscle tissue in the body.
Muscles primarily help with movement, maintaining posture, and supporting bodily functions.
There are 3 main types of muscle:
• smooth muscle, which is in the internal organs
• cardiac muscle, the muscle of the heart
• skeletal muscle, which exists throughout the body
Exercising the skeletal muscles in various ways can increase the body’s mobility, balance, and strength.
Keeping the skeletal muscles healthy is important for daily functioning.
This may be particularly important for older adults.
The normal ranges for muscle mass are as follows
Body fat is made up of tissue that contains fat cells.
Your body fat percentage is essential to know when evaluating your health.
If your body fat percentage is too low, your resistance to diseases and energy levels are lower, and you are at at risk of health issues.
If your body fat percentage is too high, you have a higher risk of diabetes and other health problems.
It is therefore important to measure your body fat percentage, and stay in the healthy range.
The normal ranges for body fat are as follows
Bone mass is the total weight of the bones you have in your body.
It’s important to maintain healthy bones by having a balanced diet rich in calcium and by doing weight-bearing exercise.
Body water is the total amount of water in your body. Over half the body consists of water.
The exact percentage varies based on a number of factors (e.g. age and gender).
It regulates the internal body temperature, strengthens your muscles and hydrates your skin.
Being well hydrated helps concentration levels, sports performance and general wellbeing.
There are many ways to increase your body water percentage.
This starts with drinking at least 2 litres of water a day.
